Japan, art and faxes

I am currently doing some work for a publication in Tokyo that often involves getting images. As such, the process through which you have to go when speaking with art galleries has recently come to my attention.

Galleries will send faxes to all media organizations they think may preview their upcoming shows. With the fax will be an application, to be sent back if you want to receive an image by e-mail to complement any features you write on their exhibition.

Not sure why this is, but it is costing a lot of manpower up and down the city and burning fax paper. Not even sure that faxes are still used overseas.

Apologies if you were expecting more from this post. Just an observation I made at work today.
